It's no fun being old. It's less fun being poor. It's hell being old and poor. Who cuts your slice of the pie? YOU DO!

Young Person Guide to Wisdom Power and Life Success Making Smart Choices Dr Brian H Gahran 9780991219384 Books

At first blush “The Young Person’s Guide to Wisdom, Power, and Life Success” by Brian Gahran might appear as sage wisdom best suited for what he describes as Generation NeXt (Millennial and Post-Millennial age groups), but don’t let yourself be fooled. With the breadth and depth of information the book unpacks, it also functions as an excellent primer for older generations (Gen X, Baby Boom, Silent, and GI) to bridge the widening gap between those who grew up in the Industrial Age and adapted to computers, and those born with smart devices already in their hands in the Information Age that began November 9, 1989 with the fall of the Berlin Wall and the rise of the Internet.

As these two Ages couldn’t possibly be more different from one another in their basic cultural building blocks, confusion and misunderstandings that crop up between the different generations often become stumbling blocks when trying to work and relate to each other successfully.

For the younger age groups, the book is an exhaustive catalogue of easily actionable ideas that shine a light on the many critical life skills they must first develop to thrive in a world that changes on a dime and often becomes more and more complex by the hour.

As many tend to rely heavily on the college or university experience to cover important aspects they must focus on in preparation for adulthood, the harsh reality often hits just beyond graduation as they become painfully aware higher education barely scratches the surface when it comes to making good career and personal life decisions for success…

…and that’s precisely where this book picks up and where the true lasting value can be found.

“The Young Person’s Guide” takes a steely-eyed look at those few tough questions everyone must answer to avoid becoming trapped in the Boomerang Generation, that group of young adults who, because of unfavorable personal economic circumstances based on bad decision making early on, are forced to return home after graduation—sometimes for years—before finding enough stability for themselves to build an independent adult life, living abundantly throughout their working years, and preparing for a comfortable retirement.

At a time when 90% of Americans reach retirement with little or nothing to show after thirty or forty years of hard work, by asking and properly answering a few difficult questions up front before setting off into their professional lives that the “Young Person’s Guide” looks at will become the difference between navigating the potentially endless choppy waters of a life built on a shaky foundation of bad decisions, and one with immutable solid footing that lasts a lifetime as the world continues to remain unpredictable around them.

Young Person Guide to Wisdom Power and Life Success Making Smart Choices Dr Brian H Gahran 9780991219384 Books Reviews

I am not the first to say emphatically that I wish I had read this when I was much younger. I will console myself with the thought that you're never too old to learn to make smarter choices. Having spent 16 years in training pursuing my professional goals, I was drawn to the chapter on level of education with its reality check for those considering their education and career choices. As a physician, I also found myself flipping through each chapter to read the "Doctor's Prescription". Even in isolation, these offer valuable tips and insights for success in life. While my girls are young, I found the perfect way to draw them into the book in the chapter on education where a section heading reads "girls rule, boys drool"! As they mature, they will certainly appreciate the injection of humor into such an immense and comprehensive guide to success.
An impressive effort, deeply and broadly researched, and with a noble motive help the latest generation entering maturity avoid the major pitfalls that can make the difference between a productive, successful, and happy life and living in one’s parents’ garage at age forty.

Dr. Gahran’s YPG is a large and information-packed book, but presented in such an entertaining way that casual browsers can enjoy it—and be secretly educated in the process. The recurring features (“Reali-tudes”, “Drs. Prescription”, “Brain Snacks“…) are so pithy and engaging they could be compiled into booklets, short courses, or motivational pamphlets on their own. Pick anywhere – you’ll almost certainly find something interesting and informative.

Dr. Gahran doesn’t pull any punches regarding the consequences of poor decision-making, but also provides sage advice about how to recognize and avoid the Big Five, and continually reassures Gen NeXt (not to mention readers like myself whose grandchildren are closer to the target age group than my children are) that they have can empower themselves to “cut their own slice of the pie”.

I have had the pleasure of knowing Dr. Gahran personally since we were both young lieutenants in the submarine service. We have kept in touch through his successful life stints as an entrepreneur, a PhD student and graduate, a Captain the in the Naval Reserves and the Herculean production of this book. I can state categorically that “young persons” of any age can have no finer guide in terms of integrity, honesty, and purity of motive (i. e., to help others) than Dr. Brian Gahran.
I am an older guy, but I hang out with a lot of young adults who often ask me for advice. This book does a superb job of filling gaps in my knowledge, so I can help them make good decisions and succeed. More important, it clearly explains why generations often have very different points-of-view and how best to bridge them. It is a well-spring of real-life wisdom.

The book features an extraordinary breadth of topics, but it’s not necessary to read it cover to cover to benefit. When something comes up with one of the young persons in my life, I simply dive into the chapter that discusses that issue. A prime example is chapter 11, "Who You Marry." This chapter alone is worth the price of the book, many times over! Next time we get together, I am much better prepared to offer practical suggestions and sensible advice. It’s like having an amazingly smart mentor by my side.

"Young Person’s Guide" is a must-read for all young people (and smart older folks) who want to stand head and shoulders above the rest. As a self-help junkie, I have not seen another book that comes close to what this one offers. Highly recommended!
